Med-El cochlear implant receives first FDA approval for use in single-sided deafness

Med-El cochlear implant is the first to receive FDA approval in single-sided deafness. Candidacy criteria are strict/conservative. Patients must have word scores of 5% or less in the deafened ear. The opposite ear must have normal or mild loss. Research studies suggest that CIs in this population definitely benefits patients single-sided deafness. The FDA has taken a cautious first step to ensuring this benefit is seen in the general population.
