The goal of this talk is to reframe hearing loss as a “connection impairment” and to discuss how the secondary effects of hearing loss can affect the employment setting. Dr. Ruffin has had profound hearing loss since birth and has been able to succeed in one of the most competitive professional fields.

To be maximally prepared, look over the resources provided by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD).

Dr. Ruffin will speak at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in Seattle. He joins a panel discussing the documentary film, Moonlight Sonata. This film is the latest release of the award-winning filmmaker, Irene Taylor Brodsky. Moonlight Sonata shares the journey of her young son receiving a cochlear implant and how his identity as a person with hearing loss changes.

Dr. Ruffin has bilateral cochlear implants and personally understands the social isolation and challenges of hearing loss. He strongly believes that self-advocacy improves a person’s experience with hearing loss. You will learn self-advocacy and communication techniques that he and other d/Deaf people have developed to succeed around the dinner table and in fast-paced and noisy work settings. He will share how these techniques complement the science that shows how deafness changes the brain. You will learn how a better understanding of these changes can greatly improve your communication.
