What does cochlear implant surgery involve?

An incision is hidden behind the ear. Bone is removed to gain access to the cochlea. The electrode of the cochlear implant is inserted into the cochlea. We use “soft surgery” techniques to prevent damage to and preserve the structure of the cochlea. The computer or "receiver" is then placed under the scalp.

After the swelling from surgery has resolved, it is normal to feel a slight bulge on the side of your head where the receiver is. It is a myth that cochlear implant surgery is "brain surgery." Most patients go home after surgery. You will have a light pressure wrap to be taken off 24 hours after surgery.
